When i asked Thea what her superpower wud b, she replied sayin that she wud love to b able to speak every language, that way travelling wud b easier and so wud communication, thereby enablin her to make lots of friends easier.
I think Thea is a lovely girl and can't wait to meet her in Budapest!
=)
P.S. can i ask is there anyone else on the programme from the UK? x
Hey everyone, I am Thea, and I am going to tell you a bit about Pippa Louise Cook.
Pippa is 19 years old and currently living in Manchester, England, where she is studying psychology and education. Which is part of the reason that she is so interested in Learning Enterprises. She is the youngest of three sisters, on of which just had a baby, so Pippa is now an aunt. She took French in school, so like many of us, we will be thrown into Hungarian and Slovakian! Pippa is an avid lover of the outdoors, and loves going for walks, roller skating, and the bliss of summer weather. She also confessed that she really likes surfing, but that is harder to come by than the usual country walk.
Her dream destination is New Zealand, and not just because Lord of the Rings was films there! Pippa loves extreme outdoor sports, and wishes that some day she could be an extreme sports instructor. Aside from dreaming about the splendid views of New Zealand, Pippa confesses that she secretly loves the English fish and chips, and would miss the gray weather that England is so famous for if she were actually to move there. But for a vacation she would be there in some 24 hours, or however long the really long flight takes.
When I asked her what the last ticket was that she bought, Pippa wrote, "The last ticket i bought was today, for a supermarket car park for my friends car so we could go shopping. I ended up buying a new pair of shoes, 2 tubs of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, bread, milk and a bottle of wine =)". I am sure that we all have a favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's, and are wishing we too had just bought some too!
Hey, my name is Samantha (Sam), and I interviewed Alysha Casnellie!
Alysha is 19 years old and has been all over the country: she was born in Florida, grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, and now goes to school in New York City. Outside of the U.S., she’s traveled to Niagara Falls (which sort of counts) and Costa Rica (which definitely counts). One of the neatest things she did in Costa Rica was hiking through the cloudy forests on top of a volcano.
Alysha has a busy life at NYU, where she is majoring in Political Science and film; she works in the NYU performance studies department, volunteers with Peer Health Exchange (health education) and also plays the violin in an opera orchestra. After school she isn’t exactly sure what she wants to do, but working for CNN, MSNBC News, or doing an individual documentary project would be ideal. Teaching in Hungary and Slovakia is going to be a unique experience that will prepare Alysha for her work in the future, immersing her in foreign cultures and teaching her about the history and politics of people around the world.
Some fun facts: Alysha’s favorite movie is My Cousin Vinny (an excellent film), if she could have invented one thing, it would have been Cheerios, and if she could have any superpower, she would never get tired or need to sleep. That would probably come in handy right about now during finals time...
Introducing....MAX LAMBERTSON! Over the past week or so Max and I have grown very close through Facebook (haha) and after learning more about him during our interview I just couldn’t wait to tell everyone about him. Max is a freshman at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He’s from Connecticut but temporarily lived in Switzerland for almost 7 years so not only does he speak French and German but has traveled extensively throughout Western Europe. This also contributes to his wanting to volunteer in Hungary/Slovakia because he has never been to Eastern Europe. He wanted to be a part of LE because it is student based and does not require participation fees like so many other international volunteer organizations. He tutors children through a campus organization at Georgetown and is excited to take the knowledge gained from this and see how it applies to teaching children from other nations. When not busy with school or volunteering, Max also puts people into a frenzy with his improv group at school and if he were to ever drop out of college he would probably become the world’s best comedian.
Sam is 20 years old. She was born and raised in South Jersey and is now an English major at GW. In addition, she works in the Athletic Department, reads with elementary school kids and assists a retired professor with macular degeneration. In her spare time she likes to go to museums and make pancakes.
As far as cool travel experiences go, Sam went to Canada with three friends and joined an international dancing club for senior citizens for a few hours which was a blast. They also stayed in a hostel that was formerly a jail meaning that their room was, in fact, a small jail cell.
Sam’s not sure about future career goals, but she would like to do something that involves fluency in as many languages as possible—maybe a UN translator/international diplomat. In the short term she’s thinking about programs like AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps and Teach for America. She’s really excited about doing LE and through it wants to become more familiar with another language and culture, gain confidence in front of a classroom, and learn effective ways to reach kids and adults while teaching. She chose the Hungary/Slovakia program because she knew little about either country and wants to learn as much as possible about them.
Fun facts: her favorite movie is Forrest Gump, her superpower would be flight, she can touch her tongue to her nose, and if she could have invented anything it would have been plastic polymers.
Hey peoples, my name is Zivile, and I am intoducing Gabrielle, who lives in Buck County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. She is ajunior at Penn State, majoring in international politics, with a special interest in the Middle East.
So why isn't she doing LE in Egypt? Cause she went there last summer for study abroad and wants to try soemthing new and different.
Her favorite book is Band of Brothers, and her favorite ice cream flavor is coffee. She has too many favorite songs to pick just one. Her best quality: she is very loyal. Worst: she can be clutzy, which I don't now how to spell, at times (=me ALL the time :) )
She can't wait to teach english in HUngary--she thinks teaching is such an accomplishment :)
I am introducing Zivile. She was born in Lithuania and now lives in Chicago. She will be speding her summer in Lithuania until we all meet.
She is a sophmore at Georgetown majoring in foreign Service/International Politics and Russian/Eastern European Studies. Her favorite things to do include running, dancing, traveling, and reading. She considers herself a very organized person, sometimes to organized.
Her favorite book is the Harry Potter series, favorite comic is Demetri Martin, and favorite song is Hotel California by The Eagles.
As far as this summer she is looking forward to everything we will be doing. She is really looking forward to orientation in Budapest and is looking to have an amazing time.
Hey Everyone! My name is Aysha and I’m really excited to introduce you to Danielle Ross!
Danielle, 21, is from Portland, Oregon, and is currently studying dance and political science in Berkeley, California. Danielle has traveled to many places in Europe as well as the Bahamas. In her spare time she dances, is in a sorority, lives in a coop, and works for Teach for America.
Danielle’s goals have changed a lot since she came to college, but she now knows that she always wants to be around the arts and have some kind of creative outlet in her line of work.
Danielle was attracted to LE because she wants to work with people who don’t have a lot in common with her, figure out good ways of communicating with other people, travel, and see Hungary.
Danielle’s father is a sailor, and her favorite childhood memory took place when Dolphins surrounded her while sailing off the coast of Washington!
Other interesting facts about Danielle include: her favorite book is Catcher in the Rye, her favorite hobby is dancing, her favorite movie is Almost Famous, her favorite food is cookie doe, and if she could have any superpower, she would fly.
Alison will be 19 on July 29th and is finishing up her freshman year at Georgetown and loves the warmth and beauty of the area. She has slowly moved up north starting in Atlanta as a tot then moving up to Winston Salem, North Carolina for the ten years prior to moving to Georgetown. Alison loves school, but she does miss the southern way. In high school she remembers how much fun she and her friends had driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway and taking beautiful photos of each other.
One thing we have in common is vacationing in Destin, Florida while growing up. Alison loves to water ski and seems to enjoy anything outdoors. For fun at Georgetown she and her friends have dance parties and go out on the town in search of kickin’ live music. Some of her favorite music includes Tegan and Sara, bluegrass, some emo, and especially female vocalists. A couple places where Alison finds these tunes are at Newport Jazz Festival and Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC. When she is not cutting a rug, Alison loves to kick back and read a good book.
Alison’s favorite subjects in school have been English and history. She is thinking about becoming a publisher or a teacher. On campus she has become involved in many activities including the Carroll Fellows Initiative, which involves original research. She is starting her major research project in the fall and is juggling a few ideas for her concentration. As if Alison is not busy enough she works at a coffee shop.
We had a great time chatting and I cannot wait to meet her in person!
Hi everyone, I'd like to introduce you to Taylor Ann Drew!
Taylor Ann is a Southern girl who will turn 24 in July. She hails from Tallahassee, FL, and will be a senior next fall at the University of Florida studying health science with a minor in education. After taking a year and a half off during college to live in Vail, Colorado, learning to become a snowboard master on the ski slopes, Taylor Ann decided she wanted to pursue a career working with the geriatric population. This idea was inspired in part by her grandfather, who recently turned 91 and showed Taylor Ann that the elderly are actually pretty awesome company. She’s recently earned a position at Shands learning hospital, which is one of the top programs in the country for students in her field. Through this opportunity, she has been able to participate in research studies and read the results that come out of the hospital.
When she isn’t studying biology or psychology, she enjoys going to the springs in Gainesville, riding her bike, and of course, lying on the beach. Taylor Ann appreciates the novelties of the South, like bluegrass music, fish fries, and kegs of sweetwater (which are just a few of the reasons why the South is so great!) She has spent six weeks studying abroad in Florence, Italy, and seven more traveling around much of Europe with just her sister and a Eurorail pass.
One item she won’t forget to pack when she heads to Budapest in June is her mandolin, which she has played for about a year and which we should definitely all make her do a performance on during training. Although every element of the trip will be exciting, she is most looking forward to meeting her host family when the program begins.
Introducing (drum roll please)….Elizabeth Niles! Elizabeth is a 21 year-old from Jacksonville, Florida who is currently majoring in Government and English (and minoring in German) at Georgetown. Living in Florida has given her the opportunity to spend time on the beach, which she has taken full advantage of. For example, she can surf on her head. She has also had sharks approach her boat while fishing, and although she is not afraid of sharks, she wonders if perhaps she will be eaten by one simply because she has tested the fates on too many occasions. Her time in DC has afforded her different opportunities. For example, she referees several intramural sports, including softball, basketball, and volleyball. She is also the third ever female GRILL MASTER in Georgetown’s extracurricular grilling society. If she could’ve invented anything, it would’ve been velcro… just because it is so random. She prefers the swing set to the sandbox, and prefers action and war movies to ‘chick flicks.’ Her mother was a gymnast who knows the stunt woman from the movie Flashdance, and she does clogging (a ‘country version of tap’) with her mother on occasion. She is very excited for LE this summer, and her grandmother was from Hungary.
Hi Everyone! I was lucky to talk to Aysha Bagchi. Aysha is a freshman at Stanford. She lives in the dorms, gets along great with her roomates, and is undeclared (but she's considering philosophy and history). She hails from Austin, TX, where one of her favorite childhood memories is "riding" stone statues of cows outside of Amy's Ice Cream shop(her favorite food is Mexican Vanilla ice cream). Aysha's dad is from India, and she's travelled there half a dozen times. She's also visited Paris, London, Italy, Beijing, and Israel. Aysha has moved four times. In her spare time, Aysha enjoys being a movie buff and playing sports. She prefers papers to exams, her favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, and her favorite movie is Casablanca. If she could have invented anything, it would be the computer. Aysha is really excited to experience daily life in another culture and to make a difference by teaching others.
Above all of the rest of tidbits you should know about Rebekka Nordtruff, there is one that is more important than the rest. She is TERRIFIED of sharks. While she had always expected she had this fear, it manifested itself last summer in the shallow waters of Tobacco Caye (an island off the coast of Beliz that you can walk around in less than a minute), where she was interning in the Women’s Department of the Ministry of Health writing grant proposals. Now on to the less important things. Rebekka, 21, is a senior at Boston University majoring in International Relations and minoring in Biology and Psychology. She hails from Orange County, NY, about an hour and 15 minutes NW of the city. Currently she is spending most of her time applying for jobs but plans to attend medical school in the future. Bekki is an exceptionally talented young woman, devoting her time to her dance theater group, ballet, jazz, and playing the saxophone and harmonica (she will surely bring along the latter this summer). Bekki is looking forward to rediscovering her roots in Hungary. Her grandmother was an illegal immigrant from Hungary (very scandalous) and thus she has always felt a strong desire to rekindle her relationship with goulash. She is pumped about visiting Eastern Europe because she has never been.
David, 22, is a senior at Missouri, originally from Kansas City. He is majoring in engineering and he is psyched to get out of the States and travel as much as possible, and is anticipating his trip to Hungary with immense enthusiasm and eagerness.
He is involved with a Engineers without Borders Program in South America and is also interested in pursuing that at a later occasion in order to grace such a program with his talents as well.
Dave always enjoys a nice game of croquet and is known to spice up any conversation with his scholarly knowledge of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard.
So, to sum up, look forward to meeting David and appreciating his greatness.
