Does anyone know what kind of thank you gift for the host family would be appropriate? Also, what kind of American things are people bringing aside from pictures and magazines?
As for host family gifts- I recommend something that represents the town you live in, your state, or the US, or YOU. If you get in contact with your host family, and you find out that they have two sons, you could bring two baseballs with your local team's logo on it, if you are into baseball. This is just a suggestion, and often times you wont know a lot about your host family. If you know nothing, everyone has a kitchen (beware of what you bring for food, though- no spoilage please), or room on a shelf for a picture. Thanks for bringing this up- the small gift is a nice thank you which will be treasured!
For American things, I can't stress enough how important pictures are- pictures of everything- your house, your mom, your dog, your school, everything. Magazines are great to share culture, and serve as great teaching tools as well.
I was going to get a picture book of where I am from to give my host families. Something that represents Missouri or the Midwest in general. I've seen a few "Then & Now" picture books of Kansas City (which is where I am from) that I might buy for them. They're pretty much just a collection of pictures, not too many words.
In terms of gifts, souvenirs from your hometown (and/or the city where you go to college) are the best. Books with lots of pictures, calendars, even pens or mugs or socks that feature pictures of your state.
